Kelly Magovern – Martial Arts Gym Training (March 5, 2009)
This is my first training video here on my new YouTube channel. It was filmed in the early hours of March 5, 2009. I’m primarily using this video as like my “starter” video. By “starter” video, I mean that this is the video that I want to base my future videos on. It’s like when people are documenting their weight-loss, they take a “before” picture and then have the “after” picture later. So yeah, I just want to see how much I can improve upon this video in like 6 months or a year (or even 5 years).
The first half of the video is primarily punches and kicks (I seem to have a great affinity for wheel kicks, huh? haha!). The second half of the video is me doing basic strength-training exercises throughout the rest of the gym. I primarily do those strength-training exercises as a way to enhance my martial arts performance. I am not lifting weights to get huge like a bodybuilder. I just do those exercises that I believe will enhance my martial arts.

Thank you so much …
Thank you so much for the advice Kelly!
Yeah, after hearing your tips I figured that I should do drills that strengthen my leg and lower back muscles to help me get the technique right. I am trying to also take the movement slow and use my hips more efficiently.
Haha, I feel like a newbie at the gym when the guys are also doing strong pec and straight kicks that make the bags swing!

I also want to add …
I also want to add that I think basic good eating habits are also helpful. I think this is kind of a no-brainer, but I thought I’d mention it anyway. Eat lots of protein so that your muscles can recover and grow. If you do that, and just drill, drill, drill your kicks like a madman, I think you’ll find that everything about muay thai will just get easier and easier. Hope that helps.

If you watch my …
If you watch my training video on this channel that I did on March 10, 2009, you can see me doing these exercises where I am leaning against a bar and lifting my leg up and down. That particular exercise I find very helpful for all types of kicking. For me, the key to great thai kicks is all in the lower back muscles. Doing that exercise will strengthen your lower back and make your thai kicks easier I believe. It will make the finishing movement (the recoil) easier for you, too. Good luck!

Just got back from …
Just got back from a muay thai session, and I actually sparred for the first time today! While we were sparring, I noticed that my partner had more efficient kicks than I did…
Can you give me any pointers to perfecting the technique of a standard muay thai angle kick?
(Particularly finishing the movement after contact.)

I don’t have a …
I don’t have a strict workout routine. I just go into the gym and work on whatever my body feels like working on. Some days, I do upper body stuff. Some days, I do lower body stuff. Some days, I do cardio. Basically, what you see in my videos here is what I work on. Light weightlifting and a lot of shadowboxing. ;p

Ah, if I had to pick one style that I love the most, it is muay thai. I think that’s awesome that you are training muay thai.

So since you train by yourself, what kind of workout routine do you do?

Thanks! I’m a …
Thanks! I’m a female, and I just started training in Muay Thai about 3 months ago…It’s really gives me a great overall workout and hopefully I can compliment my style with bjj and such, but for now I take classes just like any other beginner, haha. It’s crazy that you started training since you were 7 years old! Haha. It’s also really cool that you’re dedicated to martial arts and that it is really something you are passionate about.

By the way, I know …
By the way, I know I answered with more information than you asked for, but I just thought I’d put it out there (to anyone watching) that I am interested in finding others in the San Jose area who like my style of martial arts and see if they’d let me train at their dojo (or some place with a heavy bag, haha!).

I have been doing …
I have been doing martial arts since I was 7 years old (I am 30 years old now). And yes, I started formal training in a style called Bok-fu. I left that style when I was 18. I go into a little more detail about my background in the martial arts if you watch my introduction video on this YouTube channel. Right now, I don’t train at any dojo. I just haven’t found any place or group of people who I like training with. So, for now, I train alone. ;p

hey kelly, how long have you been doing this and did you use to actually train at a dojo before?

One of my older …
One of my older brothers used to play it all day, every day. I remember thinking to myself that Sweet Child O’ Mine seemed kind of..’not cool’ though. Then, my cousin (who was into pop music) was driving me home one day and it came on the radio..on a pop station..and he made it louder! This song was NOT cool anymore haha! It’s funny how you get influenced when you’re young. Heh, so much for growing up in the “Rock House”…shortly after this, I was all “Go LL & do the wop” hahaaa!

Hey, Lauren. I …
Hey, Lauren. I wouldn’t say that this video is the first time I have trained in awhile. But it’s the first time I have really decided to devote 100% of my energy to martial arts. Before, I was kind of scattered. But now, I feel focused. So, I wanted to have a beginning video on which to base future videos. So, that is what this video represents for me. I just want to see what my body is really capable of.

HAHA! I laughed …
HAHA! I laughed that that song is the song that happened to be playing in my gym as I was filming that part of the video. I have never heard Guns N’ Roses played in my gym before. Yet right as I filmed that, that song came on. I chuckled to myself.

Hey Kelly, so is …
Hey Kelly, so is this you training for the first time after a long break sort of thing? If so, how long has it been since you practiced your Martial Arts… good on you for doing what you love!.. Go for It Kelly! I am looking forward to seeing your progression and… I might even have a go at one of those wheel kicks… only if I were to try it out on someone, I am afraid they would only cop it in the knee caps (can’t get my leg up that high! LOL! )

I totally agree. …
I totally agree. Unfortunately, 24 Hour Fitness doesn’t have any heavy bags. If I can get ahold of a heavy bag, I will definitely film my punching and kicking on it. But for right now, the only gym I have access to is 24 Hour Fitness. So, I have to make do with what I have available to me.

To FINact: I think …
To FINact: I think you’d be surprised. I have seen a wheel kick used successfully by Seth Petruzelli in an MMA fight on the Ultimate Fighter. And I have seen them used successfully in TKD fights. So, although I think they are low percentage, I wouldn’t count them out. That said, I don’t really have a desire to fight MMA. This is just more like artistic expression for me.

Do those moves on a punching bag dude. I get a better feel for the moves when I see them performed on a heavy bag.
